Presenting options is not the same as having an opinion.

Three routes on a wall is not a choice. It is a studio hedging in public and handing back the one decision it was paid to make.

A studio shows three routes. The client picks one. Everyone in the room calls this collaboration. It is not collaboration. It is the moment a studio hands back the only decision it was hired to make.

Where the routes come from

Three routes are almost never three answers to the same question. They are one answer, a safer version of that answer, and a third that exists so the first two look sensible. The studio already knows which one it wants. The presentation is a way of getting there without having to say so.

That is the generous reading. The less generous one is that options are insurance. If the work fails, the studio chose nothing and the client chose wrong.

The cost does not land in the presentation. It lands much later, in a room the studio is not in. Someone asks why the mark looks like that, and the honest answer is that it was the one people liked on the day. That answer does not survive a new marketing director, a bad quarter, or a competitor doing something louder.

A decision made by preference can be reversed by preference. A decision made by argument has to be beaten by a better argument, and most people will not bother trying.

What to do instead

Bring one position. Write it down before any visual work begins. Say what the brand is claiming, who it is arguing against, and what it is prepared to lose in order to hold that claim. Then show the work that follows from it, including the parts that are uncomfortable.

Show rejected thinking if it helps, but show it as reasoning rather than as a menu. A rejected route explained is evidence the studio thought about it. A rejected route offered is an invitation to reopen a settled question.

Clients are not fragile. Most have sat through enough presentations to recognise a wall of options for what it is. What they rarely get is someone who will say this is the answer, here is why, and here is what it costs.

That conversation is harder to sell. It is also the only version of this work worth paying for.
